Implications of random-matrix theory for terrace-width distributions on vicinal surfaces: improved approximations and exact results
نویسنده
چکیده
Quantitative measurement of the equilibrium terrace-width distribution of vicinal surfaces enables detailed investigation of step–step interactions. Using results from random-matrix theory, we point out simple analytical expressions that assist in this process, improving considerably over standard techniques and allowing assessment of weak repulsions, heretofore inaccessible except by indirect methods. This approach suggests new properties for experimentalists to measure and, by calibration with exact results, provides insights into controversies about assessing the interaction strength. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Analysis of terrace-width distributions using the generalized Wigner surmise: Calibration using Monte Carlo and transfer-matrix calculations
Measurement of terrace-width distributions ~TWD’s! of vicinal surfaces is used routinely to find the dimensionless strength à of the elastic repulsion between steps. For sufficiently strong repulsions, the TWD can be described by a Gaussian about the mean step spacing, but controversy has arisen on the correct prefactor in the relation of the TWD variance to à . Instead of the various Gaussian ...
متن کاملExtraction of step-repulsion strengths from terrace width distributions: statistical and analytical considerations
Recently it has been recognized that the so-called generalized Wigner distribution may provide at least as good a description of terrace width distributions (TWDs) on vicinal surfaces as the standard Gaussian fit and is particularly applicable for weak repulsions between steps, where the latter fails. Subsequent applications to vicinal copper surfaces at various temperatures confirmed the servi...
متن کاملEvolution of terrace-width distributions on vicinal surfaces: Fokker-Planck derivation of the generalized Wigner surmise.
We use a Fokker-Planck equation to justify the generalization of the Wigner surmise for the energy-level spacing in quantum systems to the simple expression for the equilibrium terrace-width distribution of steps--with arbitrary-strength repulsions--on a vicinal surface, taking advantage of analogies to one-dimensional models of interacting, spinless fermions. This approach leads to an analytic...
متن کاملDensity-functional theory investigation of oxygen adsorption at Pd(11N)(N=3,5,7) vicinal surfaces
We present a density-functional theory study addressing the on-surface adsorption of oxygen at the Pd(11N) (N = 3, 5, 7) vicinal surfaces, which exhibit (111) steps and (100) terraces of increasing width. We find the binding to be predominantly governed by the local coordination at the adsorption site. This leads to very similar bonding properties at the threefold step sites of all three vicina...
متن کاملAnalysis of terrace width distributions on vicinal copper surfaces using the ‘Wigner surmise’: comparison with Gaussian approach
We have analyzed the terrace width distribution on a large number of Cu (100) and (111) vicinal surfaces using the standard Gaussian fit as well as by using an alternative analytical distribution, which comes from the perspective of fluctuation phenomena and is referred to as the generalized Wigner surmise. The chief motivation is to extract optimally the strength A of the elastic repulsion bet...
